How would you polietly tell a friend to shut up?

Its becomming a real problem. my friend goes on and on about herself for hours and if I can actually get a word in edgewise she sits there and twirls her hair like "uhuh..." Theres no point in a friendship like that so how can I tell her that this needs to end or the friendship will?
