Relationship b/t video memory and ram?

I've got an opportunity to buy a computer with 8 gb of ram really cheap. Unfortunately, it only has a 128mb video card. If it runs out of discrete video memory, can it use the ram as well? That is, will I find that the high amount of ram will compensate for the bad video card in graphics-intensive applications, such as games and 3d modeling? Thanks.
