Mazda diesel van occasionally not starting?

That's a tough one, it could be a problem with your blow off valve, if its not functioning correctly, and trying to build up back pressure to run the turbo before the engine is started properly, then you wouldn't be able to get enough air in and out to get it started. That crack could be throwing some sensors off and causing that problem. I'd start with that, and go from there.
