I'm in love with my bestfriend...what should I do?

I've loved him for like over a year now and we've never talked about "us" but I know someone had told him that I liked him and I know for a fact that he knows that I still do, but he told my friend that he doesn't want to go out with me and end up hurting me because he really really cares about me and he wouldn't be able to stand losing me. I want to get over him because it hurts too much and who knows how long it'll take him to do anything or who knows if he'll EVER do anything. I want to be wih him and I want him to love me the way I love him, but is it worth it to stick around and keep getting hurt and just wait till something happens or should I just move on. Keep in mind that I love him with all my heart and would do ANYTHING for him no matter what it is. There are guys that are interested in me, but I don't want to tell any of them yes if my heart is still with my bestfriend. Should I just give up on "us" or just try to wait it out.......?
